Hamstring Strain Treatment
Achieve Fastest Recovery
Hamstring pull/strains are both common and painful. They strike athletes of all sports- including runners, skaters and football, soccer and basketball players.
During a hamstring strain, the muscle gets stretched too far or might even start to tear. It may occur during exercise that involves a lot of running and jumping or sudden stopping and starting.
Hamstrings is a group of three muscles that run along the back of your thigh. They allow you to bend your leg at the knee.
During a hamstring strain, one or more of these muscles gets stretched too far. The muscles might even start to tear. You're likely to get a hamstring strain during exercise that involves a lot of running and jumping or sudden stopping and starting.
Causes
- Hamstring injuries typically are caused by rapid acceleration activities when running or initiating running activity.
- Common in sports such as soccer, football, and track.
- Even common exercises, such as jumping rope, tennis, and elliptical machine walking can lead to injury of the hamstring muscles.
Grades of injury
- Grade I- A minor strain is classified as a grade I tear. Grade I injuries tend to be mild in that they tend to heal fully with only minor aggravation to the injured, especially in the sedentary individual.
- Grade II- grade II tears are partial ruptures
- Grade III- a complete rupture, or tear, is classified as a grade III tear. It most frequently occurs in the athletically active.
Severely torn muscle causes impaired function. On the other hand, in power athletes, hamstring injuries can be severe and debilitating. Many a promising or successful athletic career has been limited or ended by such injuries.
Symptoms
- Sudden and severe pain during exercise, along with a snapping or popping feeling
- Pain in the back of the thigh and lower buttock when walking, straightening the leg, or bending over
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Oftentimes, a "pop" is heard or felt by the injured athlete
- Mild hamstring strains may not hurt too much. But severe ones can be agonizing, making it impossible to walk or even stand.
Examination
Physical examination- to check the movements at hip and knee that aggrevates pain.
Diagnostic tests- X-rays and MRI to rule out other problems
Goals of treatment
- To reduce pain
- To reduce swelling
- To increase joint mobility
- Restore the level of function you had before the injury
- Increase muscle strength
- Promote healing
- Decrease stress and abuse of the injured thigh, and
- Allow full use of the limb
